Improve Employee Retention Through Technology

Presentation by: Ben Conry, Flashtract

Session Overview

Studies show that it costs 6 to 9 months of an employee’s salary to replace them and on average they take 70% of their company knowledge with them. To make matters worse, the rate at which employees are leaving for new jobs and industries doesn’t even account for the aging workforce within the construction industry. On the other hand, companies who maintain a high retention rate see increased profits by as much as 4 times. Technology has finally arrived to the construction industry and it’s changing the game and the stakes. One way it can positively impact your business is by improving retention through increased efficiencies and work output. It allows companies to do more with what they already have. In this session, we’ll share how you can use technology to improve retention, reduce inefficiencies, attract new talent, and increase profit as you grow your company.

On the Economic, Political, and Business Climate

Presentation by: Roger Tutterow, PhD, Kennesaw State University

Session Overview

Nine years ago, we cleared important hurdles that were necessary steps back toward "normalcy” after the Great Recession. As the economic expansion moved through its 11th year, it was derailed by a global pandemic not seen in a several generations. Two years into the post-pandemic recovery, the economy faces new set of challenges threatening a return to recession. In this session, Dr. Roger Tutterow provides a timely overview of global, national and regional economies. Participants will consider the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on the retail sector and real estate, prospects for resolution of supply chain and labor market dislocations, the recent upturn in inflation, ongoing changes in Federal Reserve policy changes including both an increasing of policy interest rates and the “unwinding” of bond purchases, performance of residential and non-residential real estate markets and the implication of recent demographic trends for the real estate industry and general business climate.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the impact of the pandemic recession on output, sales, employment and financial markets at both the national and local level.

  2. Identify the three primary challenges facing economic prosperity (supply chain, labor shortages & elevated inflation) and how they are interrelated.

  3. Consider how Federal Reserve after the 2008-9 and 2020 recession have contributed to economic recovery but also set the stage for a rekindling of inflation.

  4. Review developments in the non-residential real estate market during and subsequent to the pandemic recession. Special emphasis is placed on the lodging, office, retail and industrial subsectors.

  5. Appreciate how elevated and volatile materials prices, along with labor shortages, have contributed to reduced inventories of residential product.

  6. Consider how housing appreciate and rising mortgage rates have combined to drive concerns over affordability in the residential market.

  7. Access likely outcomes in the November election and consider implication for economic policy in 2023.

How Contractors Can Bridge the Age Gap

Presentation by: Robert Coker & Larry May, Carr Riggs & Ingram

Session Overview

By some estimates, about 10,000 workers are retiring every day. Unfortunately, these aging Baby Boomers are taking a significant volume of knowledge with them as they walk out the door. This leaves a huge wake that can’t be filled by Generation X, as they’re much smaller by volume. Many contractors are beginning to view Millennials as the likely sole solution to today’s labor woes. They’re taking important and necessary steps to attract them to the industry, and even tailoring their recruitment strategies to reach 20- and 30-somethings.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Construction industry has a projected 665,000 worker shortage for 2022.

  2. The baby boomer generation is exiting the workforce even more quickly due to the pandemic.

  3. There are things companies can do to help recruit replacements and start transferring knowledge.
